Are you a commercial CFD code user looking to reduce your licensing costs? Are you not yet using CFD software and want to take the plunge without breaking the bank?

Are you a researcher or a doctoral student in need of an affordable and customizable CFD code?

Our OpenFOAM training courses are designed for you!

As OpenFOAM users since 2008, we have been offering training courses since 2011 to share our experience with this tool. Our courses enable you to start on solid ground and approach the steep learning curve of OpenFOAM with greater confidence. We tailor our training to provide programs that align with your needs, your level in CFD, and your knowledge of OpenFOAM.

In order to help you to get familiar with the software, all our training sessions are conducted on-site. We train you on your computer, your operating system, and your version of OpenFOAM. Once the training is complete, you can easily access the simulation cases generated during the application exercises. This on-site presence also allows us to better understand your requirements, to provide the necessary knowledge for your applications, and to offer training for up to 4 collaborators at no additional cost.

Our standard training programs are divided into three modules that are customizable in time and content. (to be defined together based on preliminary evaluation and available budget)

OpenFOAM Basics

To get started with OpenFOAM: understanding the software logic, its architecture and the way it operates. This training aims to provide the keys to a successful start, become proficient on simple cases, and gain autonomy in using OpenFOAM to progress independently later on.

If you intend to use snappyHexMesh, the meshing tool integrated into OpenFOAM, we recommend opting for both training sessions (OpenFOAM basics and SnappyHexMesh) simultaneously to address meshing and simulation topics in parallel and gradually increase complexity throughout the training.

Prerequisites:

  • Basic knowledge in computer science
  • Understanding of fluid mechanics
  • Concepts of computational fluid dynamics (CFD)

Goals:

At the end of the training session, you will be able to:

  • Setup a simulation case
  • Run a simulation in serial and parallel modes
  • Monitor a simulation
  • Export simulation results for analysis

Duration and cost: 3 days – 3600€ excluding VAT

SnappyHexMesh

To create meshes using the meshing tool integrated into OpenFOAM: understand the way it operates, know the good practices and available features.

If you also want to get started with OpenFOAM, we recommend opting for both training sessions (OpenFOAM basics and SnappyHexMesh) simultaneously to address meshing and simulation topics in parallel and gradually increase complexity throughout the training.

Prerequisites:

  • Basic knowledge in computer science
  • Concepts of computational fluid dynamics (CFD)

Goals:

At the end of the training session, you will be able to:

  • Prepare and import geometries
  • Define surface and volume mesh refinements
  • Define boundary layer mesh
  • Generate mesh in serial and parallel modes

Duration and cost: 2 days – 2400€ excluding VAT

OpenFOAM Advanced

To go deeper into OpenFOAM features: simulate complex flows, use specific features or models (Lagrangian, heat transfer, fire, dynamic meshes, rotating objects, …). This training aims to focus on your application by implementing the models you need on your own geometry.

If you have chosen the OpenFOAM base training, we recommend to wait a few weeks (3 to 5) between the basic and advanced sessions. This allows you to put into practice the concepts covered during the base training and address any potential questions that arise at the beginning of the advanced training.

Prerequisites:

  • Basic knowledge in computer science
  • Understanding of fluid mechanics
  • Concepts of computational fluid dynamics (CFD)
  • OpenFOAM basics training course OR basic knowledge of OpenFOAM (case setup, run, monitoring and post-processing)

Goals:

At the end of the training session, you will be able to:

  • Choose the solver corresponding to the physics you want to simulate
  • Setup the case according to the chosen solver
  • Run and monitor the case in parallel
  • Use features and models related to your applications

Duration and cost: 2 days – 2400€ excluding VAT

Customized OpenFOAM training

If our standard programs do not suit your needs, we can design a custom training program tailored to your goals and constraints.

Feel free to get in touch with us in order to define your requirements together.

Practical information:

Target audience:

  • Our training courses are directed to apprentices, engineers, PHDs students or PHDs with prior knowledge of computer science and fluid mechanics.

Training modalities:

  • On-site training sessions: the trainer comes to you and the training is held at your workplace.
  • Groups: 1 to 4 people per training session as to maximize exchange and practical application efficiency.

Access modalities and delay:

  • After the initial contact, a phone interview is held in order to clarify your needs and context and establish the profiles of your potential training applicants. Thanks to this interview we then orient you to our best fitting offer or customize the session program to fit your needs and constraints.
  • A commercial proposition is then issued under 5 to 10 working days.
  • After this, the dates of the training session are defined according to the trainer’s availability as well as the trainee’s. A rough estimate would be a month of delay between the first contact and the training session.

Accessibility:

  • Access to people with disabilities depends on the chosen training site.
  • If your situation requires specific measures, please let us know during the phone interview so that we can take the necessary steps to match your needs.

Methods and pedagogic means:

  • Alternating theory and practical application
  • Practical cases are mainly retrieved from the OpenFOAM tutorials, but your own cases are prioritized for practice when possible.
  • On-site training session: each participant must be equipped with a computer on which OpenFOAM and Paraview software are installed. We can assist you in regards to the release versions and installation of each software prior to training.
  • A training course material (digital format) is provided to each participant.

Evaluation modalities:

  • Before training: each trainee fills a questionnaire to evaluate their background and knowledge of the subject. This allows the trainer to adjust the training content or the time spent to each notion if necessary.
  • During training, the trainer evaluates the participants’ learning progress by means of questions and practical exercises.
  • At the end of training:
    • Progress is evaluated on practical cases chosen by the trainer. When available, these cases will be ones supplied by the participants.
    • Participants will be asked to fill a satisfaction survey in order to continually improve our services.
  • After the training, a second questionnaire is sent 3 to 6 months after the session to evaluate the implementation of the newly acquired knowledge in the participants’ workflow.

Training follow-up

As a mean to assist you after the training, an optional service of technical support is proposed: in case you face trouble setting up your simulations, contact us by e-mail or phone call and we will help you solve the issues.

This service consists in a fixed hourly rate and is reserved for training participants only.
